Chicago bridge lift - State Street

Description

Every Wednesday and Saturday morning in spring the bridges spanning the Chicago river lift one by one to allow boats leaving their winter mooring to pass through and into Lake Michigan. Known as trunnion bascule or Chicago style bascule bridges, these are approximately 100 years old. This image shows the lifted State Street bridge with several yachts/sail boats passing underneath on a clear, crisp spring morning.
